Asthma is a common chronic lung condition that can: affect your breathing, affect people at any age, improve or worsen, be treated/controlled, be life threatening. Although there is no cure for asthma you can learn to control it.
Good asthma control means that you are: not bothered by asthma symptoms during the day or night; don't need to use your rescue inhaler more than 2 times/week; don't have to limit your physical activity; don't miss school or work because of your asthma; and you don't require emergency or urgent care for your asthma.
Good control also means knowing and avoiding triggers (those things that make your asthma worse). Triggers include colds or infections, cold air, smog or cigarette smoke, pollens, animals, dust mites, mold and other things such as stress, scents/fumes/chemicals, medications, heartburn and exercise.
It's important to take your medicationsand use your inhaler(s) properly to achieve optimum control over your symptoms. Make sure you have an action plan in place to help you respond appropriately to worsening symptoms.
